All Free Public Parking Lots Open For Spirit Of Beacon Day 2022

Both the Beacon Farmers Market and the Beacon Flea have graciously closed for this weekend in order to open up their parking lots to people coming in for the Spirit of Beacon Day. Both the DMV lot and the Henry Street Lot will be open.

All of the other lots around town are also open and usual, and are marked with blue Parking signs. Find pictures of them below. See more detail at A Little Beacon Blog’s Free Parking Guide.

Vendor Table Assignments and Setup | Spirit of Beacon Day 2022

Hello Vendor Table People!

If you got this email from us, it is because you registered and were accepted to have a table in the Spirit of Beacon Day festivities on Sunday, September 25, 2022. In case if went into people’s spam folder, we have republished it here.

A few highlight notes:

  • Tables: Bring your own table, tent and chairs.

  • Helpers: We will have some Spirit Volunteers to help you set up your tent if you need it.

  • Power: We are working on getting a few extension cords for you for emergency charging if you need it. Please don't count on it, but we are hoping for a few phone/computer charging stations.

  • Parking: Both free public parking lots on Henry Street are available for you to park in. The Beacon Flea has graciously closed this weekend to allow for more parking. The free parking lot at DMV is also available, but further down the road for vendors. The Beacon Farmers Market has graciously closed this weekend to allow for parking.

  • Table Location + Police: Chief Frost has asked us to tell you that should you need the help of Police on the day, to please tell them what business you are in front of. Use the address of the business and/or the business name. Don't use your table number, because the Police won't know it.

  • Spirit Table: We will have a Spirit of Beacon table near the Main Music Stage (Veterans Place) should you need to give us anything or need to find a representative right away. Volunteers Carman Johnson and Jeana Pearl Fletcher will be at that table.

  • Rain: If there is rain, we have been advised by so many people to push through and carry on. If it is really bad, we do have a rain date of the following Sunday. But let’s hope.

SETUP TIME:
10am: Setup. That is when the Beacon Police are closing the side streets and our part of Main Street, from Brett Street (Amacord) to Teller Avenue (Yankee Clipper Diner).

4pm: Breakdown. If you need to go early, that is quite alright. All of us will break down at 4pm, and the Beacon Highway Department will help get rid of the trash. Please do you part and pick up any trash you see, even if it isn't yours.

***

1pm Heads Up: At 1pm, the parade starts. Your table will be on the sidewalk, so the parade will pass right by you. But interaction with your table will slow from 1-2pm.

Bring water. You'll get thirsty.

BATHROOMS
There will be a porta-potty for you in both of the far corners of the Rite Aid parking lot, and across from St. Rocco’s. So, North and South Chestnut Street, and Eliza Street/Church Street.

PARKING
Both free public parking lots on Henry Street are available for you to park in. These are the lots behind the Towne Crier and Yankee Clipper, as well as the lot behind the Post Office and Mobil Gas Station. Both the Beacon Flea and the Beacon Farmers Market have graciously taken the hit for you by closing on this day. Thank you Markets! Everyone please buy from them next weekend.

CONTACT PERSON:Your point person of contact will be Katie Hellmuth. She is the Spirit of Beacon Chair, and is at-the-ready for your calls. Text or call her at 917-822-5391. If texting, tell her who you are.

BRING YOUR OWN TABLE: Bring your own table, tent and chairs.

TABLE ETIQUETTE: Your table will be in front of a business, but not blocking the business front door. We need to make the businesses as accessible as possible. Beacon businesses will be open on this day. Encourage your visitors to browse the business behind you.

DON'T BLOCK A BUSINESS' DOOR
Set up to the right or left of the business you are in front of. Leave a clear path to their door so that the public can get in. Please do not pile up your stuff in front of their storefront. The public still needs to walk behind you on the sidewalk to get to stores. Use the space under your table for that. Thank you!

FOOD
Thanks to you, the Spirit of Beacon Day has gotten so big, that Dutchess County wants to know about your food, to make sure it's safe. You might need a temporary food permit, but might not. If you are selling or giving away any food of any kind, you'll want to run it by the Inspector Shannon Fatum. Call Shannon at 845-838-4801 and leave her a message, or email her at sfatum@dutchessny.gov. She is waiting to hear from you, and knows about the Spirit of Beacon Day. If you need a temporary permit, which is $30, she will email you the application.

Don't be afraid. Call her. She wants to make it work for you. She has talked to several of you already!

Musical Lineup Meeting At Veterans Place - Coming To You Soon!

Finalizing the musical lineup for the Main Stage at Veterans Place with these two! Goldee Green has been an integral part of this Spirit of Beacon Day, pushing the planning details along every day with Katie James, Inc. and A Little Beacon Blog!

A reporter by nature (you’ve read her articles in the Beacon Free Press) she is the front woman for her band GG and the Shades, is a teacher, and producer. She was one of the first Spirit Coordinators we could pay this year for her hard work, thanks to our donors and sponsors.

Bosco we are blessed with to use his stage and tents as he has lent in years past. This year, the City of Beacon is paying him to rent the stage, tents and sound and Bosco will be running sound and performance transitions on the day. Bosco and the Storm will be closing the day with their energetic performance - despite the heavy lifting they are doing to set up the stage and keep everyone running smoothly!

Releasing the musical lineup to you soon!

Former Mayor Randy Casale Accepted To Be This Year's Spirit of Beacon’s Grand Marshall

Former Mayor Randy Casale has accepted the Spirit of Beacon Committee’s humble request for him to be this year’s Spirit of Beacon’s Grand Marshall of the Parade, for our 45th year!

Randy Casale is a Beaconite who served the City in various ways, including as Beacon’s Highway Superintendent for 16 years, City Council member, and as Beacon’s Mayor. Randy told a friend once that he always wanted to be the Mayor of Beacon. That is how deep his commitment to the city was and is. Randy will always let you know what he thinks, and while your debate with him may get spirited, you will both know where you stand. Next day, friends again. As Mayor, Randy may have pursued a direction, but after he heard from the public who attended City Council Meetings to voice their opinions during Public Comment sessions, Randy was known to change his position based on his constituents.

Today, Randy has not slowed down. He can be spotted walking all over this city, and currently works in the The Roosevelt Bar. We only took a minute of his time to get his acceptance as he was preparing for a Friday evening behind the bar, serving the weekend crowd. Thank You Randy!

Stephen Claire Of Beacon Music Factory Coordinating Music And Performances For Spirit Of Beacon Day

Spirit of Beacon Day is *not possible* without our Spirit Coordinators! Stephen Claire of Beacon Music Factory is our Spirit Music Coordinator for the stage at Cross Street. He is also a sponsor.

We locked in the 12x12 stage and tents today with Durants Party Rentals. Stephen is working with our central Spirit Music Coordinator Goldee Green of GG and the Shades to create the lineup, sound checks, transitions, etc. We wanted to help spread the Spirit of Beacon to either end of town.

Look for performances by Beacon Performing Arts Center and Ballet Arts Studio (all of us are named Katie, so that’s a trip for organizing this). Gwen Laster’s jazz ensemble and Beacon Music Factory students. We booked Aaron Verdile for his sound equipment. Thank you Nick Page for letting us use the property, and the new store for working with us to be there and use their power.

September 25 is almost here! Woo!

Table Arrangements In The Works! After School Clubs Are Welcome To Register Their Own Tables

Making the Table arrangements now! Jeana is using her landscape architecture skills to modify the Table Map, and has added color coding (joy) and porta potty locations.

She will be helping vendors on the day to find their spot. Vendors bring their own table, chairs and tents. Have you registered yet? We know! Time is ticking. Even A Little Beacon Blog hasn’t registered yet, but just did. Highlands Current was on it early. St. Rocco’s just registered, and Slater Chemical just register.

After School Clubs: we REALLY want you to have your own tables! Like Kaleidoscope, Drama, Textile, etc. Lets everyone see how awesome you are!

Yay to everyone who registered so far. Still open.

See you Sunday September 25, 2022 from 11-4pm

Porta Potty Plans Are In - Free Parking Lot Spaces Will Be Open

City of Beacon Police Chief Sans Frost was kind enough to take us around to different porta potty location points. We want to make them convenient to you, and he wants to make sure we can find a spot that isn’t a parking spot, because he *really* wants to make all of the city’s free parking lot spaces available to you… Stay tuned for a fill list of free parking lot spaces in Beacon!

With his help, we have a great porta potty plan! Volunteer Jennifer Garfield-Abrams has excitedly taken this on to help coordinate!

Oh the things you don’t necessarily think of right away but are super important!

Bagpipe Bands Are Booked For Beacon's 45th Spirit Of Beacon Day!

One of everyone’s biggest concerns for this 45th Year of the Spirit of Beacon Day was the bagpipe bands. Beacon must have the bagpipes! Thankfully, both the Hudson Highlands Bagpipe Band and the Amerscott Bagpipe Band are available for our day!

Thanks to our early sponsors, Key Food Beacon and The Roundhouse, we were able to heavily pursue both bands in the middle of summer vacations to secure that enough bagpipers would be available to perform in Beacon’s 45th Spirit of Beacon Day on Sunday, September 25, 2022. Bagpipers do travel to England every now and again to participate in bagpipe things, so we were lucky that they were available this particular weekend.

Checks have been written, contracts signed. We’re on!

Raven Rose Signs On As Spirit Sponsor

Raven Rose! Thank you so much for coming on as a Spirit Sponsor ($250)! You support the Beacon community always and left us up!

Your flowers are beautiful, and your arrangement workshops a must-do! Relax yourself by walking into Raven Rose and picking a household gift for you or a friend. Located across the street from one of the official Spirit of Beacon Pop-Up Experience locations, Howland Cultural Center.

Spirit of Beacon Day starts at 11am with music, then parade starts at 1pm, then music and fun to close it at 4pm. Mark your calendar! SAVE THE DATE!

Meeting With Chiefs Of The City Of Beacon - Map Of Parade Participants In The Works

Met with the Chiefs of the City of Beacon (Police and Fire) and Lieutenant Walden and City Administrator Chris White to catch up on coordination for this Big Day — to visualize where the parade participants need to pull up on Wolcott.

The Police team were excited to use their fancy and fun Smart Board to pull up the Google Map. Felt just like we were in the elementary schools (have read to the kindergartners), who also love their Smart Boards for showing all the things.

We’re going to make you a map so that parade participants can see where to pull up! City Administrator tried to duck out of photo, but we got him! He was there!

Sunday, September 25th, 2022. Tell your friends!

New Logo For Spirit Of Beacon - Winner Announced!

The Spirit of Beacon day has been in full swing for 45 years as a solution to bringing young Beaconites in to quell racial unrest that had bubbled over between the youth in Beacon High School and the community in the late winter/early spring of 1977 in Beacon. For its 45th year, we are creating a new logo in celebration!

In most of that time, there was no logo to brand the day. The focus was on everyone else’s logo to promote organizations and non-profits who provide services. When Gwenno James took over as the Chair of the Spirit of Beacon Day years ago, she recognized the need for a logo, and a volunteer and professional illustrator, Josh McKible, designed one.

This year, after Gwenno stepped down to accept new responsibilities at her job, the new Committee wanted a new direction for the logo. A logo design contest was launched, and the assignment given.

We are excited to announce that we have a winner!! Kim Dei Dolori.

The Assignment

Direction for how to design the logo was as follows:

  • Community: Reflect Beacon as a community.

  • Location: Reflect Beacon in its unique location between the mountain and the river, with buildings and houses in between. Consider using illustrations of a mountain, river, apartment building and house.

  • Colors: Colors can reflect the Beacon City School District colors, but do not have to. The color purple has been mentioned as a desired color, in addition to earthy colors like green, brown, red, and blue. No need to base your colors off of this website. These colors are temporary and will be changed once the logo is selected.

The Logo Entries

We wanted to show you everyone who entered, to help give them a lift in their promotion.

Kelsey R. Bradley
@kelseyrbradley

Tatyana Smith
@whatuplove

The Winner: Kim Dei Dolori

When Kim submitted, she right away explained that she did not include the word “Day” in the logo. “I figured, while we only have one official day to celebrate, the Spirit of Beacon lives on always and can be represented any day.” The Spirit of Beacon Committee agreed.

In terms of Kim’s inspiration: “I loved the direction and challenge of showing our town tucked between the mountains and the river and had so much fun coming up with this design. You’ll see nods to iconic Beacon landmarks and the playful, quirky font gives a warm feeling of nostalgia with a handmade quality. I hope you enjoy it!”

The Committee brought on another talented Beaconite designer, Allie Bopp, to aid in the voting process. Our Treasurer, Nickeya Allen, wondered about the brown sun, so as a group we asked Kim for a few variations. Meanwhile, we did some research on color theory, and discovered we very much liked the brown.

Said Nickeya from her research: “I read here that Brown creates a sense of stability and support, which aligns totally with the motto of Spirit of Beacon Day!” We asked Kim for a few variations, which she took graciously and quickly, but we ultimately came back to this original design.

Kim is a graphic designer and art director living in Beacon and wants to work with more local organizations and small businesses. She says: “I love meeting new people and creatively connecting with others.” Take a peek at more of her work at her website, and pass her and all of these designers on to your friends.

Shout-Out: The team at Katie James Inc. provided art direction on this design.

PlaymakerUPumas Sign On As Top Level Beacon Of Light Sponsor Of Spirit Of Beacon Day 2022!

PlaymakerUPumas have signed on as a top level Beacon of Light Sponsor of the Spirit of Beacon Day 2022! PlaymakerUPumas is a basketball program run from the gym inside of the Old Beacon High School (now known as the KUBE Art Center owned by Ethan Cohen the art collector, not the film director).

Kids who participate in PlaymakerU’s program love it, and attend camp in the summer. The Spirit of Beacon really appreciates their support and attempts to reach the young people in this area.
